Abstract


Having analyzed the data on peat composition, specific physical and chemical conditions on the bottom of swamps and taking into consideration the microorganisms activity the authors propose a hypothesis that peat swamps constantly produce and emit flying gases, such as: methane (marsh gas, biogas), silanes, phosphines, boron hydrides, hydrogen and etc., which cause spontaneous combustion of peat in natural conditions. Comparison of the enthalpy and specific heats of marsh gases combustion, as well as some other kinds of fuel enabled the authors to propose a grounded hypothesis about one of the causes of spontaneous combustion of peat.
